Study of Prenzlauer Berg Berlin, Germany

This study focuses on evaluating a single city block that serves as an example of block typology through which we may understand the broader urban fabric. The highlighted block is located in the central Northern area of Prenzlauer Berg district off Bundesstrasse Danzinger Street between Pappelallee and Lychener Street.

Diagrammatic drawings evaluate open space, building height, circulation and multimodal transportation to identify key characteristics of the block typology. Technical drawings reveal a block typology that is comprised of a diverse mix of residential, office, commercial, and institutional spaces, with predominantly six-story buildings and mid-block courtyards that can serve as public space. This block typology identifies characteristics that define the unique urban fabric of Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin.

Street typology surrounding this block demonstrate the influence of transportation on the overall street scape. Section D shows a busy multimodal main thoroughfare with four automobile lanes, bike lane and street car lines with few street trees. On the other hand, Section E shows a side street with fewer automobile lanes, parking, and street trees designed at a scale for pedestrians. Transportation has a direct impact on street typology, scale, and quality of the public spaces that define the urban fabric more broadly.
